Public Programs
Six public programs about local history are offered each year. CCHS members attend free; cost for the general public is $5. All programs are held at the Carmel Christian Church, 463 E. Main Street., at 2 p.m., unless otherwise indicated.
February 12: Lee Lonzo, former assistant principal and athletic director at Carmel High School, will give a presentation about the life of Dale Graham. Graham spent 25 years (1964 to 1989) as principal of Carmel High School and was president of the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The year 2012 marks the 125th anniversary of Carmel High School, and to have one indiviudual at the helm of the school for a full one-fifth of its history is remarkable. Lonzo will talk about the accomplishments that occurred under Graham’s tenure.
April 15: What was that funny-looking bowl used for? Is that beat-up table with the claw feet worth anything? Is the gaudy jewelry your great-aunt left you costume jewelry or the real thing? Grab a treasure you’ve always wondered about and find out more about it at the CCHS Antique Appraisal Event. Local antique dealer Peg Durrer is donating her time and expertise to provide general value information and history on the pieces brought in. Who will have the most unique item? Most valuable? Come be surprised! Members can have one item appraised for free. Extra items cost $5 per appraisal. Non-members must pay $5 per item. The event it open to the public and free for anyone to attend. Disclaimer: Estimates will be provided for the proposes of entertainment with this program only and are not intended for insurance purposes, etc. (Note: Due to spring break, this CCHS program will be held on the third Sunday of the month.)
June 10: David Heighway, Hamilton County Historian, will present Hamilton County’s Contribution to the Civil War and will talk about what life was like on the local homefront during the war. This is part of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, 1861 to 1865.
August 12: Old fashioned Ice Cream Social at the Monon Depot with political speeches of candidates for office (to be determined later.). Open free to the public. This program will be held on the grounds of the Monon Depot Museum, 211 First St. SW.
October 14: Carmel native and author Dan Logan will give a presentation on Carmel’s Interurban, which was a rail line that ran from Indianapolis to Carmel to Noblesville in the early 1900s.
December 9: Annual meeting and holiday party.
Valentine’s Day Tea for Kids, Parents, and Me!
Family members of all ages are invited to the Valentine’s Day Tea at the Simply Sweet Shoppe Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. Enjoy finger sandwiches (kid-friendly, of course!), petite cakes, other tiny nibbles, and of course tea after having fun with a hands-on craft. During our tea we will learn a little about the history of the tea as a typical afternoon event and why some people still enjoy them. Participants are welcome to dress up in fancy tea attire, though casual diners are welcome too!
The cost for the tea is $15 per adult, $10 for the first child, and $7 for each additional child. The event is sponsored by the Simply Sweet Shoppe and the Carmel Clay Historical Society. Call 317-846-7117 to reserve your spot.
“Remembering Carmel” — CCHS’s Annual Springtime Luncheon
Come to the CCHE’s annual springtime luncheon May 10 at 11 a.m. at the Woodland Country Club to hear some wonderful stories given by long-time Carmel residents. After a delicious lunch, participants will enjoy watching video clips of several people talk about life in Carmel before Keystone Ave. stretched past 116th St.; when the buildings on Main Street were still residences, hardware stores, and farming stores; and when Northern Beach southeast of town was the only public park or pool for summertime play. Among the reminisces are those of the late Phil Hinshaw, long-time resident and author of Carmel history. History’s mysteries: Old Carmel Cemetery Speaks
Head out to Old Carmel Cemetery June 26 at 10 a.m. for some fun history among the stones. Participants will track down the graves of specific people buried in the cemetery and then participate in activities involving those individuals and their connection to Carmel’s history. This is a great family activity and a perfect way spend a Saturday morning before having lunch in downtown Carmel. This event is part of Carmel’s 175th anniversary celebration.
